MONTH OF NONSENSE ENDS

”That was it, August and the Month of Nonsense! All in all 29 words that don’t really mean anything. Except for those in the know.” //
”I had to leave many words out of my list such as phaser, naquadah, Vulcan nerve pinch, quidditch and shark repellent bat spray.” //
”But now, dear readers, I’d like to know your favorite nonsense words!” //
”Is there a word missing on my list that you think everyone should know? Feel free to educate me and others by leaving it in the comments!” //
”I’ve now posted daily for hrair days so I’ll soon return to my normal update routine. Until then… Qapla’!”

ÖRKIT – ORCS (Taru sormusten herrasta – The Lord of the Rings)

”Legolas! Two already!”
”I’m on seventeen!”
”Huh? I’ll have no pointy-ear outscoring me!”
”Nineteen!”

The orcs in The Lord of the Rings were originally elves that were corrupted and turned into creatures of darkness by the evil Melkor. Nowadays the word orc can be used for several ogre-like creatures but originally it was Tolkien who created the modern use for the word in The Lord of the Rings. The word orc derives from the Latin word ”orca” that means whale or sea monster.

ÄÄRETÖN EPÄTODENNÄKÖISYYSMOOTTORI – THE INFINITE IMPROBABILITY DRIVE (Linnunradan käsikirja liftareille – The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

”Ford! There’s an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk to us about this script for Hamlet they’ve worked out.”

Harmi kyllä kyseinen pelargoniruukku tuli sittemmin vaatimaan kostoa.

The infinite improbability drive can make almost anything happen as long as you know how probable (or improbable) it is that said thing happens. It cannot make impossible things to happen. Therefore it is not impossible only highly improbable that two missiles suddenly turn into a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias. Later on the bowl of petunias came back with a quest for vengeance.

TÄHTIPORTTI-SYMBOLI – THE STARGATE SYMBOL (Tähtiportti – Stargate)

”Chevron seven, locked.”

Tähtiportin toimintaperiaate on seuraava: jokainen Tähtiportin symboli kuvastaa jotakin paikkaa avaruudessa.

The Stargate works as follows: each symbol in the Gate represents some place in space. When you code six of them in, the place in the middle of these places is the destination of the wormhole being created. The seventh symbol tells the origin point of the wormhole. The symbol for Earth (and thus the last symbol coded in when leaving Earth) resembles the letter Å (Swedish O) and is the insignia for the Stargate program. I used this symbol in high school geometry classes to mark whatever was supposed to be found. Everything else was just x, y, or z but nerds always have more fun, even during math lectures.

ZAT-ASE – ZAT GUN (Tähtiportti – Stargate)

”Our cameras saw some sort of weapon.”
”Oh. Well, it’s hard to say.”
”Some sort of state secret?”
”No, just difficult to pronounce.”

Zat’nik’tel, eli lyhyesti zat-ase, on erinomainen, joskin vaikeasti lausuttava alien-alkuperää oleva ase.

Zat’nik’tel, or zat gun for short, is a pretty neat yet difficult-to-pronounce weapon of alien origin. Ir you fire it once, it knocks the target unconscious so you can use it for friends, too. Another shot will kill the target. Third shot makes the target disappear (no one has explained where to) and this works for objects as well. A zat gun is also roughly shaped like the letter Z so it is easy to remember what it is called.

YOUNGLIN (Star Wars)

”Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.”

Siinä missä padawan on oman mestarin saanut jedioppilas, kutsutaan nuorempia lapsia nimellä younglin.

A Padawan is a Jedi apprentice who’s got their own Master, but Younglin is the name for younger children. I think this word is very cute and I sometimes use it for my camp kids or the students when I work as a substitute teacher. Too bad it doesn’t work very well in Finnish.

X-GEENI – X-GENE (Ryhmä-X – The X-men)

”Are mutants the next link in the evolutionary chain or simply a new species of humanity fighting for their share of the world?”

X-gene is the gene that causes mutations that basically turn you into a superhero (or super villain, if you prefer). As a biologist, I’d say that mutations don’t really work this way and that most mutations are small and also harmful, but since the story is good, I don’t care. Also I choose not to complain because in the alphabet challenges I can always count to X-men when I get to the letter X.

NOITURI – WITCHER (Noituri – The Witcher)

”Toss a coin to your Witcher…”

Witchers are professional monster hunters. To become a Witcher you must survive the Witcher school, and getting through it alive is no easy task. If you survive the school and a bunch of monsters attacking you and all the moral problems of not knowing who the bad guy actually is, you’ll still not be rich and nobody actually likes Witchers. So a Witcher is a bit like all table-top role playing game characters expect that you’re not rich by the end of an adventure.

VALEHTELIJAGLADIAATTORI – CONGLADIATOR (Kapteeni Sinikarhun 13 ½ elämää – The 13 ½ Lives of Captain Bluebear)

”They combine the talents of a conman, comedian, stage actor, samurai, heavyweight boxer, chess grandmaster, and – of course – Roman gladiator.”

Valehtelijagladiaattorit ovat Atlantiksen suosituimpia taiteilijoita. He esiintyvät valtavalla areenalla, jolla he kertovat tarinoita.

Congladiators are the most popular performers in Atlantis. They perform in a huge arena where they tell stories. The better the story and the louder the applause, the more points the congladiator gets. Congladiator duels are especially popular. If I lived in Atlantis, I’d surely spend a lot of time following these gladiator games!

VARUSTEVYÖ – UTILITY BELT (Batman)

”The true crimefighter always carries everything he needs in his utility belt, Robin.”

Batmanin varustevyössä on kaikkea, mitä (super)sankari tarvitsee: bumerangi, köyttä, ensiapuvälineitä, tainnutuskaasua, tainnutuskaasun vasta-ainetta… mitä ikinä juoni vaatiikaan sankarillamme olevan. Itse luotan enemmän taskuihin, mutta varustevyö on kyllä mitä mainioin keksintö.

Batman’s utility belt contains everything a (super) hero might need: a boomerang, some rope, first aid kit, knock-out gas, antidote to knock-out gas… whatever the plot requires of our hero. I trust in pockets more myself but utility belt is a great invention nevertheless.
