MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP ENDS

”So, that was the Month of Friendship. I hope you had fun.” //
”But now I’ll talk about something I have purposefully avoided in my blog: representation.” //
”You see, I did notice that there are very few female characters on this list. And not one friendship between two (ore more!) women! There were also very few female characters on my Month of Heroes list but let’s not get into that now. But friendship between women seems to be such a norm that there’s not that much of a story to tell…” //
”…unless you want to go all in and tell mainly about the friendship between female characters, in My Little Pony style. Which can also work really well!” //
”There’s more emphasis in media placed on not having a all-male-cast anymore which, when done well, is a really good thing.” //
”But female characters still seem to be there for romantics, or then the friend is a male character. An important friendship between female characters is still pretty rare.” //
”Of course there can be other important relationships between women but for example romantic relationships didn’t make it on this list.”

”Due to historical reasons there has rarely been that sort of comrades-in-arms type of friendship between female characters. And my my it’s good to write about it and – at least to me – awesome to read about it!” //
”There would be plenty of room for that kind of friendships in science fiction where gender roles are looser anyway. But it seems to be hard to find.” //
”So… yeah.” //
”Anyway, I hope Month of Friendship brought you some happiness. What are you favorite fictional friendships and why? And do you have ideas for future Month Challenges?” //
”Click the speech bubble in the upper right corner of this article to leave a comment!” //
”I will now return to my usual publishing pace. Have a good March, everyone!”

But not to sound like I only complain I’m going to introduce you to a friendship between female characters that I find pretty good. I didn’t take it on my list because I’ve been there to create it. The characters in question are Mr Brony’s and my role playing characters Tea and Thranon, respectively, and we play them in the Hero Academy RPG we play with our friends. Mr Brony and I have spent quite a few moments on walks talking about our characters and their relationship.

Ensinnäkin he ovat vuosikurssinsa nuorimmat opiskelijat, ja lisäksi he pitävät monista samoista asioista.
Mr Brony’s character, Nyctea ”Tea” Salo is a teenage girl from a small town in Southern Finland. She can turn into an owl. Her childhood was pretty normal except she was bullied in school and she was always afraid someone would find out she turns into an owl sometimes. That’s why Tea has always had trouble trusting others. My character, tiger-centaur-alien Thranon has had a very different childhood: she lived in a hunter-gatherer tribe lead by her grandfather. There, physical stress, dangers and injuries are everyday occurrences but on the other hand, Thranon has always had unwavering support and help from her home tribe. When she came to the Hero Academy, Thranon had hard time understanding how anyone could ever betray their own. In the Academy, Tea and Thranon quickly became friends, despite of their different backgrounds. First off, they’re the youngest of their class, and they also share many interests. Tea admires Thranon’s skills in fighting and swordsmanship, and Thranon finds Tea to be a fun and witty companion for many adventures. Who knows what adventures these two and their hero friends will end up in!

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 26

LEGOLAS & GIMLI (Taru sormusten herrasta – The Lord of the Rings)
”I never thought I’d die fighting side-by-side with an Elf.”
”What about side-by-side with a friend?”
”Aye… I could do that.”

And last but definitely not least… you all knew this was coming, right? The Lord of the Rings is full of good friendships but no one can be surprised that Gimli and Legolas made it to this list. These Dwarf and Elf started off being very suspicious towards each other, to put it mildly, just because of their race but shared adventures made then inseparable friends. And that quote is pure gold.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 25

ELLIOT & E.T. (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial)
”I’ll be right here.”

No etpä tietenkään. Lisätään vähän lentämistä, muutamia hyviä vuorosanoja ja John Williamsin musiikki, ja Elliotin ja E.T.:n ystävyys sulattaa sydämet jälleen kerran.

If you’re lost and alone on a strange planet, can you hope for anything better than that you’d be found by a child who wants to help you. Well of course not. Add some flying, a couple of good lines and music by John Williams, and the friendship between Elliot and E.T. is ready to melt hearts once again.

The quote above is E.T.’s final line in the movie, said as a good-bye to Elliot.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 24

DIN DJARIN, CARA DUNE & GREEF KARGA (The Mandalorian)
”You want some soup?”

En oikeastaan tiedä, pitävätkö nämä kolme toisiaan ystävinä vai enemmänkin vain ei-ihan-kauhean-ikävinä tyyppeinä, joiden kanssa ollaan kuta kuinkin samalla puolella. Suoraan sanoen en edes kauheammin välitä. Haluan vain, että he liittoutuvat ainakin kerran kaudessa pieksemään pahiksia. Erittäin siistiä.

I don’t really know if these three consider each other friends or more like not-terribly-horrible people with whom they are more or less on the same side. Frankly, I don’t even care that much. I just want them to team up at least once a season to beat up bad guys. So cool.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 23

MIYAMOTO USAGI & GENNOSUKE (Usagi Yojimbo)
”You dirty, untrustworthy, lying, cheating, son of a dog of a pig of a rat! I ought to mince you up into mulch!”

Usagi and Gen ended up working together by coincidence, and since Gen isn’t really a very honorable rhino, Usagi got cheated. Later Usagi had a chance to hit back, and at some point these two became more or less friends. The story of Usagi and Gen isn’t so much a story about friends but about becoming friends. And sometimes it takes time…

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 22

KELMIT – THE MARAUDERS (Harry Potter)
”…they didn’t desert me at all. Instead, they did something for me that would make my transformations not only bearable, but the best times of my life…”

As a child, Remus Lupin had no friends because he was a werewolf and werewolves generally don’t have buddies. But when he went to school, he got three friends, James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew who didn’t abandon him even when they found out the truth. On the contrary, they even became animagus so that they could be with Remus even when he was a wolf. And even though in the end it all ended badly, Remus’ school years were the best time of his life, thanks to the other ”Marauders”.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 21

RESSU & KAUSTINEN – SNOOPY & WOODSTOCK (Tenavat – Peanuts)
”It’s hero time!”

Snoopy is a dog, and Woodstock is a small bird, and mostly these two just sit on the roof of Snoopy’s dog house and talk. Sometimes Snoopy and Woodstock have serious arguments and swear never to talk to each other again. Despite that Snoopy was ready to risk his life to save Woodstock from the monstrous cat, World War II, next door because that’s simply what friends do. The thing the cat hat caught turned out to be a yellow clove, not Woodstock, but Woodstock understood what Snoopy had done and friendship won again.

The quote above by Snoopy when he attacks World War II, this time to save Pappermint Patty.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 20

KIRK, SPOCK & McCOY (Star Trek)
”Spock, I don’t know too much about these little tribbles yet, but there is one thing that I have discovered.”
”What is that, Doctor?”
”I like them – better than I like you.”
”Doctor, they do indeed have one redeeming characteristic: they do not talk too much.”

There’s no one without another, and no two without the third. Captain James T. Kirk, Mr Spock and Dr Leonard ”Bones” McCoy work in every possible duo (and by ”work” I mean that they argue most of the time and spend the rest of the time risking their lives to save their friends) but when these three are together, what will come is history. Thanks to these three and their – often difficult – friendship Star Trek is a thing, and that’s not a small thing to accomplish.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 19

MacGYVER & JACK DALTON (MacGyver)
”Jack, having you as a friend is a little bit like owning a pet disease.”

There are that kind of people who have big dreams – and who cause others mountains of troubles because of those dreams. Jack Dalton is the dreamer type, and MacGyver is the type who deals with those mountains. In the end, however, Jack is a fairly decent friends who rather saves his friend than the treasure of his dreams. But Mac has to suffer pretty much before reaching that end…

The quote above by Pete Thornton about Jack causing MacGyver trouble once again, in the episode The Odd Triple.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 18

KATHRYN JANEWAY & TUVOK (Star Trek Voyager)
”I never realized you thought of me as reckless, Tuvok.”
”A poor choice of words. It was clearly an understatement.”

One of my favorite things in Voyager is the friendship between captain Janeway and her security officer Tuvok. There’s absolutely no romance there, it’s just a pure friendship between two people who have been through all sorts of dangers together and who respect each other so much they don’t hesitate at all if they feel they need to tell the other one off. Voyager’s story both begins and ends because of Tuvok and Janeway’s friendship: in the first episode Janeway wants to find her friend Tuvok who has gone missing which causes the Voyager and its crew to end up 75000 light years from home – and in the final episode Voyager finds its way back home after Janeway’s dangerous gamble to save Tuvok. The picture refers to the episode Fury where Janeway finally finds out when Tuvok’s birthday is – but not how old he is.

The quote above by Janeway and Tuvok in the episode Scientific Method.
