SUN BADGER

Ystävämme Romeo kysyi minulta ja Lumihevoselta, voisimmeko piirtää hänelle aurinkomäyrän ”googlaamatta mikä se oikeesti on”. Reippaina taiteilijoina tartuimme toimeen ja työstimme omia tulkintojamme toisillemme ajatuksiamme jakamatta. Alla ovat minun aurinkomäyräni, ja Lumihevosen aurinkomäyrät löytyvät täältä.
Our friend Romeo asked Snowhorse and me if we could draw him a sun badger ”without googleing what it actually is”. Brisk artists as we are we started working on our own interpretations without sharing our ideas wit one another. You can see my sun badgers below, and Snowhorse’s sun badgers can be found here.

Aloitin tutustumalla mäyriin muutamalla luonnoksella. Kuvissa on sekä mäyriä (Meles meles) että mesimäyriä (Mellivora capensis).
I started by getting to know badgers through a couple a sketches. In these pictures there are both badgers (Meles meles) and honey badgers (Mellivora capensis).

Lumihevosen ensimmäinen reaktio Romeon pyyntöön (ennen kuin päätimme olla kertomatta ideoitamme toisillemme) oli ”ai Päivänsäde?”, millä hän viittasi Salamandastronin vuoren valtiaaseen Brian Jacquesin Redwallin taru -kirjasarjassa. Päätin piirtää Päivänsäteenkin, ja hänen seurakseen mäyrävaltiaan uskollisen kumppanin, Tuulisiipi-haukan.
Snowhorses’s first reaction to Romeo’s request (before we decided not to tell our ideas to each other) was ”oh, Sunflash?” by which she referred to the ruler or the mountain of Salamandastron in the book series A Tale of Redwall by Brian Jacques. I decided to draw Sunflash, too, and here he is accompanied by his faithful companion, Skarlath the kestrel.

Ensimmäinen oma ajatukseni oli lähestyä ”aurinkomäyrää” heraldiselta kannalta. Tiedän kyllä, että molemmissa vaakunoissa on liikaa värejä, mutta hei, eipä mäyräkään ole niin tavallinen vaakunaeläin (eläköön Puuskupuh).
My first own idea was that ”sun badger” could be a heraldic thing. I know that both of these coats of arms have way too many colors but hey, badgers aren’t that common in heraldry either (go Hufflepuff).

Seuraava mäyrä on enemmän taiteellinen näkemys ”aurinkomäyrästä” kuin mitään muuta (paitsi tekosyy leikkiä värillisellä musteella. Harmi, että paperi ei ihan kestänyt sitä).
The next one is more an artistic understanding of ”sun badger” tahn anything else (except for an excuse to play with colored ink. Too bad that the paper wasn’t okay with it).

Eläintoteemi! Tässä yhdistyvät erilaiset taivaanilmiöt ja eläimet, joiden ajattelen sopivan yhteen niiden kanssa. Alhaalta ylöspäin toteemissa ovat revontulia hännässään kantava kettu, kuuta symboloiva jänis, aurinkomäyrä sekä myrskylintu, joka on tällä kertaa varis. (Jos joku haluaa huomauttaa minulle, etten tiedä mitään Pohjois-Amerinkan intiaanien toteemeista tai siitä, mitä asiat niissä symboloivat, hän on oikeassa. Huomautan kuitenkin, ettei mäyrä symboloinut Pohjois-Amerikan intiaaneille mitään. Siellä ei ole mäyriä. Eikä variksia.
Animal totem! In here I combine different happenings in the sky with animals that I think fit together with them. From bottom to top there are a fox carrying the northern lights in its tale (the Finnish word for northern lights literally translates to ”fox fires”), a hare symbolizing the moon, a sun badger and a stormbird that in here is a hooded crow. (If someone wants to point out that I know nothing of the totems of North American indians or what different things symbolize, they’d be correct. However, I’d like to point out that badgers didn’t symbolize anything to the indians of North America. There are no badgers there. Nor hooded crows.)

”Uhm, it is, Captain!”

Lopulta biologipuolenikin pääsi tekemään tulkintojaan. Jos aurinkomäyrä olisikin oikea eläin, millainen otus se olisi? Kenties auringon värinen mäyrän tai mesimäyrän sukulainen? Ja kun meressä elää kaikkea jännää (ja jännästi nimettyä (niin kuin merijäniksiä), aurinkomäyrä saattaisi olla myös jokin raidallinen merenelävä, vaikka meritähti… (Ja kyllä, käytin samoja referenssikuvia kuin ensimmäisissä luonnoksissa. Siitä vain, haastakaa oikeuteen).
In the end I let the biologist in me to make her own interpretations. If the sun badger was a real animal, what would it be like? Maybe a relative of the badger or the honey badger but colored like the sun? And since there are lots of interesting (and interestingly named) critters living in the seas (like sea hares), the sun badger could be some striped sea creature, like a starfish… (And yes, I used the same reference pictures as in the first sketches. Go ahead, sue me.)

Lopulta oli myönnettävä, että tiesin kiinanaurinkomäyrän (Melogale moschata) olevan eläin, joskaan en tiennyt, minkä näköinen. Joten etsin siitä kuvan ja piirsin senkin. Kiinanaurinkomäyrä ei muuten ole mäyrä.
In the end I had to admit that I knew that the Chinese ferret-badger (Melogale moschata, in Finnish, the ”Chinese sun badger”. If you google ”sun badger” you’ll ge honey badgers though) was an animal, albeit I did’t know what it looked like. So I found a picture of it and drew it, too. The Chinese ferret-badger is by the way not a badger.

Kaiken tämän jälkeen Lumihevonen ja minä istutimme Romeon tuoliin, suuntasimme kirkkaan lampun hänen kasvoihinsa ja pistimme hänet kertomaan, mistä tässä kaikessa oli kyse. Romeo sanoi törmänneensä termiin ”aurinkomäyrä” lukiessaan jotain näätäeläimistä ja halunneensa vain nähdä, miltä se muiden mielestä voisi näyttää. Siinä mielessä osuin lopulta oikeaan tulkinnoissani, mutta näiden piirtäminen oli oikeasti aika hauskaa.
After all this Snowhorse and I forced Romeo to sit on a chair, turned a bright lamp to his face and made him tell us what this was all about. Romeo said he had found the term ”sun badger” when reading about mustelids and that he just wanted to see what other people might think it looks like. In that sense I got it right in the end but drawing these was actually pretty much fun.
