DEATH’S-HEAD THORNY MANTA RAY

Kyyemo ehdotti uudeksi eläinyhdistelmähaasteeksi kolmea otusta, joilla on pelottava nimi: paholaisrausku, piikkipiru ja pääkallokiitäjä. Innostuin tästä heti, kun kyseessä on kolme erittäin hienon näköistä eläintä – joista yksikään ei edes ole nisäkäs tai lintu! Lumihevonen teki oman verionsa, joka löytyy täältä.
Mother Viper suggested three animals with a scary name for a new animal mash-up challenge: giant oceanic manta ray (in Finnish, it’s known as ’devil ray’), thorny devil and death’s-head moth. I immediately got excited as these are some really cool-looking animals – none of which is even a mammal or a bird! Snowhorse drew her own interpretation that can be found here.

As per usual, I started off by getting to know the animals:

Näiden eläinten yhdisteleminen oli tavallaan aika helppoa, kun kiitäjällä ja rauskulla on yllättävän samankaltainen perusrakenne. Kuvittelisin nämä aika pieniksi, koralliriutoilla viihtuviksi olennoiksi.
Combining these animals into one was pretty easy as moths and mantas have surprisingly similar basic form. I’d imagine these creatures to be rather small animals, living on coral reefs.

Minä todella nautin näiden piirtämisestä, joten otan mielelläni uusia yhdistelmäehdotuksia vastaan. Nyt olen tehnyt ”valkoiset eläimet” ja ”pelottavanimiset eläimet” – keksiikö joku kolme otusta jollain uudella teemalla?
I really enjoy drawing these so I’d be happy to be suggested new combos for animal mash-ups. I’ve now made ”white animals” and ”animals with scary names” – can someone come up with three animals sharing some new theme?

WHITE-TAILED GOOSE-SHARK

Eläinyhdistelmähaaste on taas täällä! Tällä kertaa valitsin itse kaikki kolme eläintä sillä perusteella, että niiden nimessä on sana ”valko” ja että niitä jollain tavalla vihataan syyttä: valkoposkihanhia inhotaan, koska ne syövät pelloilla ja kakkaavat kaduille, valkohäntäkauriita siksi, että ne järsivät omenapuita ja ovat vieraslaji (mikä ei ole niiden oma vika), ja valkohaita pidetään säälimättömänä tappokoneena. Halusin yhdistää nämä kolme hienoa eläintä yhdeksi jännäksi otukseksi.
The animal mash-up challenge is back! This time I chose all three animals myself based on two things: having the word ”white” in their name (in Finnish, barnacle goose is ”white-cheeked goose”) and being somehow unfairly hated. In Finland, barnacle geese are hated because they eat on agricultural fields and poop on streets; white-tailed deer because they munch on apple trees and are an invasive species in Finland (which is not their fault!); and great white sharks are considered ruthless murder machines. I wanted to combine these great animals into one exciting creature.

Then it was time to combine the animals! At first, there was much more deer in my creature, but the final design turned into something totally different:

The most fun part for me is always coming up with how this new animal would live and behave:

WHITE-TAILED GOOSE-SHARK

– Only males have antlers, and they grow a new pair every year
– Sharp teeth for catching fish and other pray
– The claws on flippers help kill larger pray and to move on land
– Keen sense of hearing
– Dorsal fins for balance. The animal can move the feather-like appendices up and down to communicate to others of its kind
– Strong tail guarantees speed in water

Minun mielestäni näitä yhdistelmäeläimiä on aina hauska tehdä, ja varsinkin nähdä, miten muut ovat lähestyneet samaa haastetta. Otan mielelläni vastaan uusia eläinyhdistelmiä, jos teillä on ideoita!
I always like making these mash-up animals, and especially I like seeing what others make with the same challenge. I’d be happy to make more mash-up animals if anyone has any good combos!
