”Look! This hibiscus I got as a cutting from my mom is about to bloom!” //
”I know the flowers will be red as Mäyris once got his hibiscus to bloom, and it is a cutting from the same plant.” //
”AND I have another hibiscus which blooms in yellow flowers.” //
When they’re both abloom, I can try and pollinate them… //
”…and if it works out, I can sow the seeds. I can grow a NEW hibiscus!” //
It would be then interesting to see what kind of flowers it would make: red, yellow or some other color. //
”This could take years, though…” //
”That is probably the most biologist idea you could come up with.” ”Yeah.”

LIFELINE
Työpaikallani eläintarhassa on maastossa useita sähkökaappeja, ja ne ovat aika tylsän näköisiä. Niinpä siellä päätettiin, että ne koristeltaisiin eläinaiheisilla maalauksilla. Kuka vain työntekijä saattoi ehdottaa teosta sähkökaappiin, joten tietenkin osallistuin.
At my workplace in the zoo there are a lot of electrical center boxes around, and they’re not that nice to look at. So it was decided that they’d be decorated with animal-themed paintings. Anyone working in the zoo could suggest a piece of art, so naturally I had to participate.

To my anonymous application I added a not-so-great sketch and an explanation that the painting would be of several animals drawn with just one line that would tie them all together.

I showed these sketches to my boss — who hadn’t seen my application — she said, ’This is like a lifeline that connects all animals to one another!’ To which I replied that ”Lifeline” is literally the name of my piece and she got its idea just the way I had intended.

One sunny day it was time to start painting. The electricity center box was 140 cm by 180 cm so there was a lot of area…

Naturally, I painted myself up to elbows. 15 years of art school didn’t teach me how to paint cleanly…
