More ink and Star Wars!


Tämä on kohtaus Bad Batchin ensimmäisestä jaksosta, jossa päähenkilöt taistelevat droideja vastaan vain sähköiskuja antavat harjoitusaseet aseistuksenaan. Joten heidän pitää improvisoida. Crosshair pyytää Wreckeriltä veistä, jonka tämä lainkaan epäröimättä heittää – ja Crosshair ampua täräyttää veistä suoraan ilmasta ja tuhoaa viimeisen droidin. This is a scene from the first episode of The Bad Batch where the main characters fight droids armed with nothing but practice weapons that only give electric shocks. So they need to improvise. Crosshair asks Wrecker for a knife, which he tosses without any hesitation – and Crosshair just blasts the knife mid-air and destroys the last droid. A really cool scene, and Crosshair is an amazing character, even though he is really nasty and a total pain in everyone else’s butt.

Darth Maulin piirtäminen on kuin piirtäisi muotokuvaa tiikeristä, kun pitää yrittää saada kaikki ne raidat ja täplät oikein! Ja kuten tiikerillä, ei Maulillakaan ole täysin symmetriset kuviot.
Drawing Darth Maul is like drawing a portrait of a tiger – just trying to get all those stripes and dots right! And, just like tigers’, Darth Maul’s face patterns aren’t exactly symmetrical.

I wouldn’t have thought I’d once draw a picture of the butler of a space gangster but sometimes these prompt words make me try new things.

This is the only non-canon character I’m going to draw now but the prompt was just too perfect. The gentleman in question is Snowhorse’s Clone Wars OC Captain Frost, of whom you can find more art here and here.


Uudessa toivossa Chewbacca ei yhtään tykännyt (Imperiumin sotilaaksi pukeutuneen) Luken suunnitelmasta laittaa hänet rautoihin, joten Han joutui hoitamaan sen homman. Myös näköjään kiireisinä päivinä piirrän wookieita…
In A New Hope Chewbacca doesn’t like Luke’s (who is dressed up as a Stormtrooper) plan to handcuff him so Han has to do it. Apparently on the days I’m busy I end up drawing wookiees.

’Frog Lady’ on hahmo Mandalorianista, eikä varmaan olisi liikaa pyytää, että vuorosanoja saaneella hahmolla olisi oikea nimikin… No jaa, tykkäsin siitä, kun hirviöiden jahdatessa Frog Lady loikki pakoon neljällä jalalla – lisää tällaisia alienjuttuja, kiitos! Myös tekstityksen ”Frog Lady speaking Frog” on aika hulvaton.
’Frog Lady’ is a character from The Mandalorian, and I shouldn’t be too much to ask that a character with lines would have a proper name… Well, I liked it when she was chased by monsters and she jumped away on all fours – more alien things like this, please! Also the captions saying ”Frog Lady speaking Frog” are pretty funny.

Joka kerta, kun avaruusmerirosvo Hondo Ohnaka ilmestyi ruudulle Clone Warsissa tai Rebelsissä, oli hauskaa tiedossa. Olen tähän varsin tyytyväinen, varsinkin, kun en löytänyt yhtään mallikuvaa naurasvasta Hondosta.
Every time the space pirate Hondo Ohnaka appeared on the screen in Clone Wars or in Rebels it was going to be fun times. I’m rather happy with this one, especially since I didn’t find any reference pictures of Hondo laughing.

Tämä oli vain hauska piirtää, eli Yoda vuoden 2003 Clone Wars -animaatiosarjan tyylillä. Kyseisessä sarjassa on muutenkin aivan huikea tyyli, sekä visuaalisesti että huumorin osalta.
This was just a fun one to draw, it’s Yoda in the style of the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon. That series has a brilliant style, both in terms of visuals and humor.


Vinkkisanasta huolimatta en tee The Rise of Skywalker -taidetta, koska en pidä kyseisestä elokuvasta. Qui-Gonista ja Obi-Wanista sen sijaan pidän, joten piirsin heidät.
Despite the prompt word, I will not draw The Rise of Skywalker art because I don’t like that movie. I do like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, though, so I drew them instead.


Minusta tämä onnistui aika kivasti.
I think this one turned out pretty well.

Sehän oli sitten taas lokakuu, ja aika piirtää kuukauden verran musteella, eli Inktober-haasteen aika. Käytin virallista vinkkilistaa, mutta koska monet sanat antoivat minulle Star Wars -viboja, päätin tehdä tästä StarWarsToberin. Kaikki nämä on piirretty pullotussilla, ja osaan olen käyttänyt vedellä laimennettua mustetta saadakseni harmaasävyjä aikaan. Sitä tulikin käytettyä aika paljon lopulta.
It is October again, so it is time to draw with ink for a month due to the Inktober challenge. I used the official prompt list but since quite a few prompts gave me Star Wars vibes I decided to make this into a StarWarsTober. I’ve drawn all of these with bottled ink and used water-diluted ink in some drawings to get grey shades. In the end I used the greys pretty often.


En halunnut piirtää Anakinia ilman paitaa, joten piirsin nuoren George Lucasin kirjoittamassa elokuvaansa.
I didn’t want to draw a shirtless Anakin so I drew a young George Lucas writing the script for his movie.

They are not spiders exactly but close enough.


Tiedän, että kuva ja sitaatti ovat eri elokuvista, mutta ne sopivat hyvin yhteen.
I know that the image and the quote are from different movies but they go so well together.

Kohtaus Kloonien hyökkäyksestä. Kämmäsin taustan aika lailla, koska siitä ei tullut millään tapaa tasaisen värinen, mutta valkoisten tähtien lisääminen auttoi. Jos kämmäät taiteessa, ole kuin se olisi tarkoitus!
A scene from Attack of the Clones. I messed up with the background as the color became all splotchy, but adding those white stars helped. If you mess up in your art, just act like you meant to do it!


Yleensä en tykkää piirtää droideja, mutta tästä tuli mielestäni aika hyvä.
I’m normally not so fond of drawing droids but this one, I think, turned out pretty well.


Vinkkisana tai aihe eivät inspiroineet, enkä pidä tästä. No, haasteen tarkoituksena on piirtää joka päivä ja toivottavasti oppia jotain, ei tehdä suurta taidetta joka kerta.
The prompt word or the topic didn’t inspire me, and I don’t like this one. Well, the point of the challenge is to draw every day and hopefully learn something, not to make exclusively great art.

A BRAND NEW LOGO

Vanha logoni oli ollut minulla jo kuutisen vuotta, joten päätin vaihtaa sen, vaikka kyllä pidän siitä.
I’d had the same logo for six years so I decided to change it, even though I still do like it.

Saukko tosin sai jäädä uuteenkin logoon.
I kept the otter in the new logo, though.

THE BALI ANTRILL

Paluu eläinyhdistelmähaasteen pariin! Tällä kertaa ihan oikeasssa elämässä… Tämänkertaiset internetin ihmemaan satunnaisgeneraattorin valitsemat eläimet olivat balinkottarainen, muurahaiskarhu ja mandrilli. Tapani mukaan aloitin piirtämällä kuvia oikeista eläimistä.
Return to animal mash-up challenges! This time in real life… The animals that a random animal generator somewhere in the Internet gave me were Bali myna, anteater and mandrill. As usual, I started off by drawing pictures of the actual animals.

Seuraavaksi suunnittelin, miten nämä eläimet muodostaisivat yhden eläimen, jossa olisi kaikkien kolmen piirteitä.
Next I planned how these animals would merge together into one creature with characteristics from all three.

Zeb <3 Loth-beasts

Katsoin Star Wars Rebels -animaatiosarjan loppuun, ja piirsin pienen kuvan Zebistä torkuilla Lothalin suden ja kissojen kanssa. Tätä kohtausta ei ollut sarjassa, mutta Zeb on sellainen kärttyilijä, josta eläimet tuntuvat pitävän, että tämä voisi tapahtua. Ainakin minusta se olisi mukavaa.
I finished watching the animated show Star Wars Rebels and drew a little picture of Zeb taking a nap with a Loth-wolf and some Loth-cats. This isn’t a canon scene but since Zeb is a grumpy dude whom the animals seem to like, this just could take place. At least I think it would be cute.

LORD OF THE HIMALAYAS

Markhor eli kierteissarvivuohi (Capra falconeri) on Keski-Aasian vuoristoissa elävä vuohieläin, joka on helppo tunnistaa korkkiruuvimaisesti kierteellä olevista sarvistaan. Pukin sarvet voivat olla puolitoista metriä pitkät.
The markhor or screw-horned goat (Capra falconeri) is a species of goat native to the mountainous areas of Central Asia. It is easy to recognize by its corkscrew-like horns. A male’s horns can be up to a meter and a half long.

I SHINE LIKE A STAR ON THE DARK TUNDRA

Eläintarha järjesti keväällä koululaisille konferenssin, jossa pohdittiin arktisen luonnon haavoittuvaisuutta, ja tunturipöllö oli konferenssin teemalaji. Kulosaaren yhteiskoulu teki aiheesta videon, jossa esiintyi lause ”Minä loistan kuin tähti tummalla tundralla”. Kehuin nuoria hyvästä videosta ja siitä, että saivat minut melkein itkemään kesken työpäivän. Lause inspiroi myös tämän teokseni. Video löytyy täältä.
In the spring, the zoo organized a conference for middle-school students where the topic was the vulnerability of arctic nature, and the snowy owl was the theme species of the conference. The students from Kulosaari school made a video where there was this sentence: ”I shine like a star on the dark tundra.” I praised the students for their good work and almost making me cry in the middle of my work day. That sentence was the inspiration for this artwork, too. The video (in Finnish) can be found here.

OCTOPUS

Olenko maininnut, että pääjalkaiset ovat mahtavia?
Have I mentioned that I think Cephalopods are awesome?

Olen viime aikoina tykästynyt sävytetylle paperille piirtämiseen. Erilaiset värit toimivat esimerkiksi ruskealla paperilla jotenkin todella hyvin ja luonnollisesti, ja tukevalle paperille voi käyttää eri tekniikoita sulavasti yhdessä (tässä on alkoholipohjaisia tusseja, mustaa vesiliukoista tussia, lyijykynää, puuvärejä ja värillistä pullomustetta). Näiden piirtäminen on todella hauskaa ja jotenkin vapauttavaa.
Lately, I’ve really come to like drawing on colored (or mid-tone) paper. Different colors work really well and naturally on, for example, brown paper, and on sturdier paper I can easily mix different mediums (here I’ve used alcohol markers, black water-based fineliner, pencil, colored pencils and colored liquid ink). Drawing these is a lot of fun and somehow liberating.

Minusta on joskus hirveän hauskaa ottaa kuvia teoksista, kun ne ovat vielä kesken, jotta voin katsoa jälkikäteen, miten työprosessi on edennyt.
I sometimes like to take pictures of my artworks while working on them so that I can check them afterwords to see the working process.

THESE UNICORNS WERE NOT OKAY

Pelasimme kavereiden kanssa pitkästä aikaa Sankariakatemia-roolipeliä. Hahmolleni Thranonille sattui muutamia hienoja hetkiä.
My friends and I played our Hero Academy RPG again. My character Thranon had some quite awesome moments.
