Sanokaa mitä tahdotte Pimeästä uhasta, mutta mestari Qui-Gon Jinn on kyllä leffan paras osa. Hän sanoo mitä ajattelee, tekee mitä tahtoo ja on aina täysin varma siitä, mitä on tekemässä. Jos olisin Jedi, haluaisin Qui-Gonin mestarikseni, ja hän saisi myös lukea minulle iltasadun ihanalla äänellään. Lisäksi Qui-Gon on siitä eeppinen jätkä, että osaa (mahdollisesti) vulcanolaisen niskanipistyksen.

Say what you will about The Phantom Menace but Qui-Gon Jinn is the best thing in that movie. He says what he thinks, does what he wants and is always completely sure about what he’s doing. If I was a Jedi, I’d like him to be my master. He could also read me a bedtime story with his sweet voice. Qui-Gon is epic also because he knows (possibly) how to use the Vulcan nerve pinch.

Kun olin lapsi, leikin usein Sormusten herraa isoveljeni ja kahden serkkuni kanssa. Minun olin Pippin, koska olen meistä nuorin, kuten Pippin on hobiteista nuorin. (Toisaalta olin myös Gandalf, joten…?) Pippin on ehkä “tukintolvana”, mutta harva onnistuu näyttämään yhtä komealta Gondorin haarniskassa paljain jaloin. Ja vielä selviämään niistä taisteluista hengissä…

When I was a kid I used to play The Lord of the Rings with my big brother and our two cousins. I was Pippin since I’m the youngest of us, just like Pippin is the youngest of the Hobbits. (But I was Gandalf, too, so…?) Pippin may be a “fool of a Took” but not many look as handsome in Gondor’s armor barefooted as he does. Or survive all those battles…

OBI-WAN KENOBI (Star Wars)

”How did this happen? We’re smarter than this!”

Olisiko siistiä olla Jedi? Todellakin. Varsinkin, jos saisi Obi-Wan Kenobin mestarikseen, vaikka sitten joutuisikin sietämään hänen autiomaankuivaa huumorintajuaan. Melkein jokainen Star Warin hahmo olisi ansainnut paikan tällä listalla, mutta Obi-Wan on ensimmäinen, joka pääsi mukaan. Tietysti hänellä on etunaan nimi, joka alkaa vain harvoin nimiä aloittavalla kirjaimella. Mutta olisin valinnut hänet kumminkin.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to be a Jedi? It so would. Especially if Obi-Wan Kenobi was your master, even though you’d had to stand his wry sense of humor. Almost every character in Star Wars could have made it to this list but Obi-Wan is the first seen here. Of course he has a name that begins with a letter not many names begin with. But I would have chosen him anyway.

NUUSKAMUIKKUNEN – SNUFKIN (Muumit – The Moomins)

“Oh, isn’t it wonderful not to own anything!”’

Luulen, että Nuuskamuikkunen on Muumien hahmoista se, jota kaikki biologit ja muut luonnon helmassa viihtyvät pitävät eniten. Minä pidin hänestä jo ihan pienenä, vaikken ehkä osannutkaan sanoa miksi. Mutta Nuuskamuikkusen huolettoman filosofinen elämänasenne ja hänentäydellinen riippumattomuutensa muista tekevät hänestä ikimuistoisen hahmon. Ja kukapa ei haluaisi osata soittaa huuliharppua kuten Nuuskamuikkunen osaa?

I think that Snufkin is the one character from the Moomins who all biologists and other nature-dwellers love the best. I liked him even when I was little though I couldn’t say why. But Snufkin’s carefree philosophy and the fact that he depends on no-one make him a memorable character. And who wouldn’t like to know how to play the harmonica as well as Snufkin does?

MacGYVER (Ihmemies MacGyver)

Miksi luulette, että minulla on aina rullallinen jesaria laukussani ja että suosikkiaseeni on Sveitsin armeijan linkkuveitsi? Useammin kuin kerran olen joutunut kysymään itseltäni “mitä MacGyver tekisi?” Ja selvitty on, vaikka minun ongelmani eivät yleensä ole ihan yhtä pahoja kuin Macin, enkä osaa tehdä pommia banaaninkuoresta ja leivänpaahtimesta. LEONARD McCOY (Star Trek)

Tohtori Leonard “Bones” McCoy ei pidä paratiiseista, koska jää niissä työttömäksi. Hänen normaaliin päiväjärjstykseensä kuuluu kavereille vihoittelu ja näiden hengen pelastaminen oman terveyden uhalla. Bonesin luonne on hämmentävä ja hurmaava yhdistelmä ainaista kärttyilyä ja suurta lempeyttä, ainakin kaikkia itsensä teloneita kohtaan. Ja vaikka kelpo tohtori tietääkin yllättävän paljon betonista, on muistettava, että hän on lääkäri, ei muurari!

Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy doesn’t like paradises because he has no job there. His daily routine includes being pitchy towards his friends and saving their lives, even if it means risking his own. Bones’ character is a weird and charming combination of eternal grumpiness and great kindness, at least towards those who have hurt themselves. And despite his surprisingly vast knowledge of concrete, remember, he’s a doctor, not a bricklayer!

KIT CARSON (Tex Willer)

”By Josafat’s jazz band!”

Kit Carson eli Hopeatukka on Texasin Ranger, jääräpää, pahanilmanlintu ja parhaan kaverinsa Tex Willerin henkilökohtainen suojelusenkeli. Carson vihaa junia ja arvostaa elämän pieniä mukavuuksia, kuten hyvää ruokaa ja lämmintä kylpyä (hattua ei oteta päästä kuin ensin mainitun vuoksia). Hänellä on myös luultavasti Lännen historian omalaatuisin tapa manailla, erityisesti Vanhan testamentin pikkuprofeetat taipuvat kirosanoiksi. Ainaisesta vastarannankiiskeydestään huolimatta Carson on valmis ryntäämään taisteluun milloin vain sankaria tarvitaan. Iän tuomalla kokemuksella hän tietää olla koskaan lyömättä vetoa, varsinkaan kavereittensa kanssa.

Kit Carson, aka. Silverhair, is a Texas Ranger, stubborn storm crow and the peronal guardian angel of his best friend, Tex Willer. Carson hates trains and appreciates the little joys of life, like a warm bath and a good meal (but only takes off his hat for the latter). He probably has the most unique way of cursing in the history of West, especially using the prophets of the Old Testament as parts of his swears. Even though he likes to argue with everything, Carson is always ready to charge into battle whenever a hero is needed. He’s also lived long enough to know better than to gamble, especially against his friends.

DANIEL JACKSON (Tähtiportti – Stargate SG-1)

Toinen arkeologi putkeen! Jos Ichabod Crane pyörtyilee enemmän kuin kaikki muut sankarini yhteensä, Daniel Jackson KUOLEE useammin kuin kaikki muut yhteensä (silläkin pääsee listalleni…). Mutta tekee Daniel onneksi muutakin kuin kuolee joka välissä. Hän muun muassa pelastaa maapallon muutamaan otteeseen, puolustaa alienoikeuksia ja puhuu 37 eri kieltä. Väärien henkilöllisyyksien keksijänä Daniel ei sen sijaan ole kaikkein paras – ainakaan viholliset eivät uskoneet, kun hän väitti olevansa Ozin velho…

The second archeologist in a row! If Ichabod Crane faints more often than my other heroes put together, Daniel Jackson DIES more times than all the others (that’s a way to get to my list, too…). But luckily Daniel also does other things than die all the time. For example, he saves the Earth a couple of times, stands up for alien rights and speaks 37 different languages. When it comes to making up false identities, Daniel is not the best – or at least his enemies didn’t believe him when he claimed to be the Wizard of Oz…

INDIANA JONES

Onko maailmassa mitään syytä jättää Indy listalta pois? Hattu ja ruoska ja halu jahdata aarteita – mitä muuta sankarilta voi pyytää? Älyä? Rohkeutta? Kolmen päivän sänkeä? Tarttuvaa tunnaria? Indyltä löytyy nämä kaikki. Ja kuka muka voi väittää, ettei olisi ainakin vähän haaveillut arkeologian opinnoista katsottuaan Indiana Jonesit? En minä aikakaan.

Is there any reason in the world to leave Indy out of this list? A hat and a whip and a desire to hunt treasures – what else can you ask from a hero? Wits? Courage? A three-day-long beard? A catchy theme music? Indy has it all. And who can honestly say that they have not dreamed, at least a little bit, of studying archeology after watching the Indiana Jones movies? Well, I can’t.

HERMIONE GRANGER (Harry Potter)

Kun oli suunnilleen kymmenvuotias, näin itseni niin selvästi Hermionessa: kirjoja rakastava tyttö, jolla on ruskeat silmät, kiharat tummat hiukset ja etupurenta, nörtti, joka on aina luokkansa paras liki kaikessa (paitsi liikunnassa) ja joka saa myös kuulla siitä… Jopa Hermionen suojelius on saukko, joka on minun lempieläimeni! Olimme yksitoistavuotiaina käytännössä sama henkilö! Opiskelun ohessa Hermione ehtii vetää pataan aika montaa pahistakin.

When I was about ten years old I saw myself clearly in Hermione: a book-loving girl with brown eyes, dark curly hair ja too big front teeth, a nerd who is always the best at everything (except in sports) in her class and who gets to hear about it… Even Hermione’s patronus is an otter which is also my favourite animal! When we were eleven years old we were basically the same person! When not studying, Hermione kicks the butts of quite a many bad guys.
