SPIRIT & PIKKU PURO – SPIRIT & LITTLE CREEK (Spirit: villi ja vapaa – Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron)

Spirit ja Pikku Puro ovatkin molemmat villin preerian kasvatteja, jotka liittoutuivat – ja ystävystyivät – päästäkseen takaisin vapauteen ja omiensa luokse. Mutta ihminen ja villihevonen eivät voi kulkea samaa polkua kovin kauaa ilman, että toinen menettää vapautensa. Joskus suurinta ystävyyttä on ymmärtää tämä ja lähteä eri suuntiin. (Suunnilleen saman tekstin olisi voinut kirjoittaa Näin koulutat lohikäärmeesi -elokuvista ja niiden päähenkilöistä, Hikotuksesta ja Hampaaton-lohikäärmeestä, mutta Spirit oli minun lapsuuttani.)

Spirit and Little Creek are both raised on the wild prairie and they collaborate – and become friends – to get back their freedom and go back to their own people. But human and wild horse cannot walk the same path for long without one losing their freedom. Sometimes the greatest friendship is understanding this and go down different paths. (I could have written pretty much the same text about the How to Train Your Dragon movies and their main characters, Hiccup and Toothless the dragon, but Spirit was my childhood.)

ASTERIX & OBELIX (Asterix)
”They’re fond of a fight, impractical… eccentric… but you have to like them. They’re only human!”
”These humans are crazy!”

Asterixin seikkailut ovat minun lapsuuttani, ja täten myös Asterixin ja Obelixin ystävyys. Toki he riitelevät vähän väliä, kuten gallialaiset muutenkin, mutta siitä huolimatta ystävyys kestää, ja kaverille jätetään aina muutama roomalainen pieksettäväksi. Kaipa minä olen jotakin näistäkin tarinoista oppinut… Kuva ei tietenkään olisi ollut täydellinen ilman Obelixin koiraa Idefixiä.

The adventures of Asterix were a big part of my childhood, and thus also the friendship between Asterix and Obelix. Of course they quarrel all the time, like most Gauls do, but friendships last and you always leave one Roman soldier for your friend to beat up. I guess I’ve learned some things from these stories, too… The picture wouldn’t have been complete without Obelix’s dog Dogmatix.

HELLBOY & ABRAHAM SAPIEN (Hellboy)
”All us freaks have is each other.”

No siis, kun toinen kaiffari on punainen paholainen ja toinen sininen kalamies, ja jäbät asuvat samassa paikassa salaisessa paikassa seuranaan vain tylsiä virkamiehiä, niin jonkinlainen ystävyys syttyy aika väistämättä. Maailman pelastaminen joka toinen viikko vaaroja uhmaten ja toisiinsa luottaen kummasti syventää ystävyyttä. Hellboy ja Abe ovat outoudessaan todella symppiksiä kaveruksia. Kuva on viittaus elokuvaan Hellboy II: Kultainen armeija, jossa Hellboy yrittää paikkailla Aben sydänsuruja kaljalla.

Well, when one of these guys is a red devil and the other is a fish-man and they live in a secret base accompanied by boring officers, they’re bound to form some kind of a friendship. Saving the world every other week, facing dangers and having no one to trust but each other somehow tends to make the friendship even stronger. Hellboy and Abe are just adorable friends in all their weirdness. This picture refers to the movie Hellboy II: The Golden Army where Hellboy tries to cure Abe’s heartaches with beer.

MARTIN, GONFF & DINNY (Sammalkukkametsän sota – Mossflower)

Redwallin taru on täynnä hyviä ystävyyssuhteita ja tarinoita niistä. Mutta harvat niistä ovat yhtä hyviä kuin kolme nuorta jäbää seikkailumatkalla seuraamassa arvoitusten osoittamaa reittiä ja etsimässä myyttistä mäyräsotureiden linnoitusta. Soturin, varkaan ja nuoren mestarikaivajan tarinassa on sitä Hywää Wanhan Ajan Seiccailuhenkeä.

A Tale of Redwall on full of good friendships and stories of them. But few are as good as three young fellows on their quest following the guidance of old riddles to find the mythical fortress of badger warriors. The story of a warrior, a thief and a young master digger is just full of the Good Ole Fashioned Adventuring Spirit.

NELJÄ MUSKETTISOTURIA – THE FOUR MUSKETEERS (Kolme muskettisoturia – The Three Musketeers)
”All for one and one for all!”

Kolmen muskettisoturin neljä päähenkilöä, Athos, Porthos, Aramis ja d’Artagnan, toteuttavat ylepeydellä musketöörien mottoa – erilaisuudestaan huolimatta nämä neljä suojelevat yhdessä tuumin niin kuningasta kuin toisiaan. Ei varmaankaan ihme, että muskettisoturit ovat inspiroineet niin monia elokuvia ja toimineet esikuvana useille muille tarinoiden ystävysjoukoille.

The four main characters of The Three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos, Aramis and d’Artagnan are proudly following the Musketeers’ motto – despite of their differences these four stand together protecting the king and each other. It is no wonder that the Musketeers have inspired so many movies and are a role model for numerous freined group in other stories.

LOCKE LAMORA & JEAN TANNEN (Locke Lamoran valheet – The Lies of Locke Lamora)

”Rivalled only by ’Locke taught me a new trick’.”

Enpä voi sanoa, että muistan tästä kirjasta paljoakaan, koska olen lukenut sen vain kerran, ja siitäkin on aikaa. Mutta Locke Lamoran valheissa on ehkä parhaita ystävyyden kuvauksia, mitä olen koskaan lukenut. Locken ja Jeanin (sekä heidän muun joukkionsa eli Calon, Galdon ja Kirpun) ystävyys on sydäntä lämmittävää ja sydäntäsärkevää yhtä aikaa. Kukapa ei haluaisi tällaisia ystäviä!

I can’t say I remember much of this book because I’ve only read it once and it was quite some time ago. But the description of friendship in The Lies of Locke Lamora is one of the best I’ve ever read. The friendship between Locke and Jean (and the rest of their gang, that is Calo, Galdo and Bug) is at the same time heartwarming and heartbreaking. Who wouldn’t friends like these!

WOODY & BUZZ LIGHTYEAR (Toy Story)
”When it all ends, I’ll have old Buzz Lightyear to keep me company. For infinity and beyond.”

Woodyn elämä Andyn lempileluna oli täydellistä – kunnes Buzz Lightyear tuli taloon ja vei hänen paikkansa. Sitähän Woody ei voinut sulattaa, mikä johti lopulta hurjaan seikkailuun kotiin pääsemiseksi. Matkan aikana Woody ja Buzz oppivat paljon itsestään, toisistaan ja siitä, mitä leluna oleminen tarkoittaa. Ja kyseinen seikkailu teki Woodystä ja Buzzista ystäviä. Lapset kasvavat, mutta ystävyys on ikuista.

Woody’s life as Andy’s favorite toy was perfect – until Buzz Lightyear came to the house and took his place. This was something Woody couldn’t take, which finally led to a fantastic adventure to get back home. Along the way Woody and Buzz learn a lot about themselves, each other and what it means to be a toy. And this adventure made Woody and Buzz friends. Children grow up but friendship is forever.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 10

ANAKIN SKYWALKER & REX (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
”Next time just tell me to jump.”
”Now where’s the fun in that?”

Clone Wars -sarja teki sen, mihin Star Wars -elokuvat eivät ehtineet: se näytti sen taistelutoveruus-ystävyyden, joka muodostui kloonisotilaiden ja näiden seuraamien jedikenraalien välille. Keskeisimpänä näistä on Anakinin ja kapteeni Rexin ystävyys, johon kuuluu kaverin pelastaminen joka toinen päivä, täydellinen luottamus toiseen, sopivan verran sotilaallista kunnioitusta ja toisaalta sopivan verran vitsailua ja naljailua. Tämä ystävyys tietenkin päättyi ikävästi, kun Anakin rupesi Darth Vaderiksi, mutta se oli hieno ystävyys niin kauan kuin sitä kesti. (Rexin pariksi olisi sopinut myös esimerkiksi Ahsoka Tano tai komentaja Cody, mutta tämä Anakinin ja Rexin ystävyys on kaikessa hauskuudessaan ja traagisuudessaan ehkä suosikkini.)

The Clone Wars series did what the Star Wars movies didn’t have time for: it showed the brothers-in-arms-friendship that formed between the clone troopers and the Jedi generals they followed. The central one the the show is the friendship between Anakin and Captain Rex that included saving the other every other day, completely trusting each other, a suitable amount of military-like respect and, on the other hand, a suitable amount of joking and humor. This friendship of course ended badly when Anakin became Darth Vader but it was a wonderful friendship while it lasted. (I could have had Ahsoka Tano or Commander Cody, for example, pictured with Rex, but the friendship between Anakin and Rex is possibly my favorite in all its fun and tragedy.)

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 9

TEX WILLER & KIT CARSON (Tex Willer)
”They don’t produce friends like that anymore!”

Tex ja Carson ovat molemmat Texasin Rangereita, joten yleiseen työnkuvaan kuuluu kaverin rinnalla oleminen tiukimmissakin tilanteissa. Ja tämän pelastaminen joka toinen päivä (joka toinen päivä pitää olla itse pelastettavana). Tex ja Carson maustavat ystävyyttään jatkuvalla keskinäisellä herjaamisella ja kinaamisella, mutta voivat aina luottaa toistensa apuun.

Both Tex and Carson are Texas Rangers so their job is basically being by your friend’s side even in the most desperate situations. And saving his skin every other day (every other day it’s your turn tu be saved). Tex and Carson spice up their friendship with constant pickering and nagging but they can always trust in each other’s help.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 8

PIKO & FANTASIO – SPIROU & FANTASIO
”Travelling with this guy has the advantage that you won’t get bored for a second…”

Jokainen tarina tarvitsee sankarin. Mutta joskus sankari voi yksin olla vähän liian kiltti ja täydellinen partiopoika ollakseen oikeasti kiinnostava. Siksi sankari tarvitsee kaverin, joka on luonteeltaan hieman räväkämpi. Tämä on monessa tarinassa nähty kuvio, kuuluisimpana ehkä Tintti ja kapteeni Haddock. Itse myös pidän kovasti reippaan ja kunnollisen Pikon sekä hieman sekopäisemmän ja pessimistisemmän Fantasion seikkailuista. Päähenkilöporukan täydentää Pikon lemmikkiorava Spip.

Every story needs a hero. But sometimes the hero can be a bit too nice and perfect boy scout type of a person to be actually interesting. That’s why the hero needs a friend who has a bit more spice to their character. This has been seen in many stories, maybe the most famos of theim being Tintin and Captain Haddock. I also like the adventures of the brisk and reasonable Spirou and the more crazy and pessimistic Fantasio. The main characters also include Spirou’s pet squirrel Spip.
