Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, Samantha ”Sam” Carter ja Teal’c, eli SG-1 ovat sillä tavalla klassinen tarinan ystäväporukka, että he eivät todellakaan aloittaneet ystävyyttään kovin hyvin. Ammattisotilas Jack ja arkeologi Daniel eivät olleet mistään samaa mieltä. Toista ilmavoimien upseeria, Samia, kohtaan Jack oli lähinnä epäluuloinen, ja Teal’c oli kirjaimellisesti vihollisen puolella. Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, Samantha ”Sam” Carter and Teal’c, or SG-1, are a very classic friend group in a story: they didn’t start off liking each other at all. Jack the Air Force soldier and Daniel the archaeologist didn’t agree on anything. Towards Sam, another Air Force officer, Jack was just suspicious, and Teal’c was literally serving the enemy. Half a season and some close calls later and you can’t break these four apart even if you used dynamite. In this picture Sam and Daniel are excited because they found an exciting rock with exciting carvings in it, Jack is bored because he doesn’t find the rock exciting, and Teal’c is keeping guard.

PÄHKINÄ & ISOPÄÄ – HAZEL & BIGWIG (Ruohometsän kansa – Watership Down)
”My Chief Rabbit has told me to defend this run and until he says otherwise I shall stay here.”

Isopään luottamusta ja ystävyyttä ei ole helppoa voittaa, mutta Pähkinän viisas ja peräänantamaton johtamistapa onnistui siinä. Isopää hyväksyi lopulta Pähkinän ylikaniinikseen, ja Pähkinä kiipesi ojasta Isopään puolesta, kun kaksikko luuli itse Kuoleman tulleen hakemaan Isopäätä. Kaksi pientä kaniinia ehkä, mutta yksi suuri ystävyys.

It is not easy to gain Bigwig’s loyalty and friendship, but Hazel’s wise and persistent way of leading succeeded in it. In the end, Bigwig accepted Hazel as his Chief Rabbit, and Hazel climbed out of the ditch for Bigwig when the two thought that Death itself had come to claim Bigwig. SHERLOCK HOLMES & JOHN WATSON (Sherlock Holmes)
”I don’t have friends; I’ve just got one.”

Sherlock Holmes ja John Watson ovat varmasti kirjallisuuden tunnetuimpia ystävyksiä. Tosin ainakaan Sherlock ei näytä sitä kovin usein. Vain yhdessä Conan Doylen Holmes-novellissa, kun Watsonia ammutaan, Sherlock kerrankin osoittaa, kuinka tärkeä Watson hänelle on. Myös kertojana toimiva Watson huomioi Sherlockin harvinaisen tunteenpurkauksen ja toteaa, että kaikki hänen Sherlockille osoittamansa ystävyys on ollut sen yhden hetken arvoista.

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson must be among the most well-known friends in literature. Even though Sherlock doesn’t show it often. In only one short story by Conan Doyle, when Watson is being shot, Sherlock shows how much Watson means to him. Also Watson himself, the narrator of the story, notes Sherlock’s rare outburst and says that all the friendship he’s shown to Sherlock has been worth that one moment.

KOLME CABALLEROA – THE THREE CABALLEROS
”They say we are birds of a feather!”

Aku Ankka on todellinen surullisen hahmon ritari, jota useimmat sukulaiset ja niin kutsutut ystävät lähinnä pilkkaavat ja käyttävät hyväkseen. Mutta onneksi Panchito Pistoles ja José Carioca ovat oikeita ystäviä, jotka arvostavat Akua eivätkä yritä hyötyä hänestä. Vaikka kaksikko joskus raahaakin Akun aika vaarallisiin tilanteisiin, ovat he ystäviä, jollaisia jokaisella pitäisi olla.

Donald Duck is actually a rather sad character as most of his relatives and so-called friends use him or at least mock him. But luckily Panchito Pistoles and José Carioca are real friends who appreciate Donald as he is and don’t try to take advantage of him. Even though the two sometimes drag Donald to pretty dangerous situations they’re the kind of friends everyone should have.

RONJA & BIRK – RONIA & BIRK (Ronja, ryövärintytär – Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter)
”We only have this summer, you and I, and the way things are with me now, I don’t mind very much about living unless you are with me. And when winter comes you won’t be with me…”

Ronja ja Birk ovat tämän listan platoniset Romea ja Julia – heidän isänsä vihaavat toisiaan, mutta lapset eivät anna sen haitata ystävyyttään, ainakaan kauaa. Kun he joutuvat valitsemaan perheidensä ikuisten riitojen tai toistensa välillä, he valitsevat toisensa. Onneksi Ronjan ja Birkin ystävyys lopulta johtaa myös rauhaan ryövärisukujen välillä, ja ystävykset saavat olla ystäviä ihan julkisestikin.

Ronia and Birk are the platonic Romeo and Juliet of this list – their fathers hate each other but the children don’t let that bother their friendship, at least not for long. When they have to choose between each other and the endless fighting between their families, they choose each other. Luckily, Ronia and Birk’s friendship eventually leads to peace between the Robber families and the two friends are allowed to be friends.

HAN SOLO & CHEWBACCA (Star Wars)
”It’s not wise to upset a Wookiee… ’cause a droid don’t pull people’s arms out of their sockets when they lose.”

Han ja Chewie ovat vain sellainen kaksikko, että pakkohan heitä on rakastaa. Koska wookieet ovat erittäin kunniantuntoisia, Chewie on hyvin uskollinen Hanille, joka pelasti joskus hänen henkensä. Katsoja ei juurikaan ymmärrä Chewien karjuntaa, mutta onneksi Han ymmärtää ja voi tulkata kaikille meille, jotka emme puhu shyriiwookia. En tiedä, mitä koiruuksia kaksikolla on tässä kuvassa mielessään, mutta kohta jotakin räjähtää.

Han and Chewie are a duo you just have to love. Because Wookiees take honour extremely seriously, Chewie is very loyal to Han who saved his life once. Viewers don’t really understand Chewie’s roaring but luckily Han does and can translate what he says for all of us who don’t speak shyriiwook. I don’t know what shenanigans these two are up to in this picture but something’s gonna go boom.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 1

RAPHAEL & CASEY JONES (Teini-ikäiset mutanttininjakilpikonnat – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
”Friends of yours?”
”Brothers, actually.”
”I can see the family resemblance.”

Ninjakilpparit ovat minulle kaikin puolin rakkaita hahmoja, ja voisin tehdä kokonaisen sarjan siitä, miten mielenkiintoiset suhteet näillä tyypeillä on keskenään – mutta he ovat veljeksiä, joten he eivät toimi ystävyys-sarjaan kovin hyvin. Onneksi heillä on ystäviäkin. Raphael ja Casey ovat molemmat äkkipikaisia ja jääräpäisiä ongelmamagneetteja, joten heistä tuli saman tien hyviä ystäviä. No, parin tappelun jälkeen, siis. Sekä Raph että Casey tykkäävät moottoripyöristä, joten piirsin heidät askartelemaan sellaisen parissa.

I love my Ninja Turtles a lot and I could make a whole series about the interesting relationships these guys have with each other – but they’re brothers so they don’t really work for this friendship series. Luckily, they have friends, too. Both Raphael and Casey are hot-headed and stubborn trouble magnets so they became good friends in no time. Well, after a couple of fights, that is. Both Raph and Casey like motorcycles so I drew them working on one.
